Douglas Johnson recently donated this portrait of James Monroe he received from his brother, Albert Johnson. He is shown here with Rosemary Mahan, executive director of the Westmoreland County Museum. The Johnson brothers had been born in Shiltons, outside Montross and moved away in adulthood to pursue their life's work. Albert Johnson worked at the White House continuously for 6 presidents- from Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th President to Ronald Reagan, the 40th president.
Albert Johnson was supervisor of records at the White House when he received this portrait of James Monroe as a 1973 Christmas gift from President Richard Nixon and First Lady, Pat Nixon. This framed picture includes a print of the original Samuel F.B. Fox portrait of Monroe that hangs in the Green Room at the White House, as well as a note of greeting from the Nixons embossed with the Presidential seal.
